After Croatia it would probably be Bulgaria (Plovdiv, Varna, Sofia), Albania (Butrint), Serbia and Romania, they all have lots of cool places of historical interest. Bosnia and Montenegro would be on the bottom of the list, but Mostar and Kotor are obviously pretty cool places.

I definitely recommend that you give albania a chance. Because if you compare Tirana to small town america, Tirana is the better option. IF, however, you decide to be gay incognito, as an American you WILL be treated like family everywhere you go. Like i said earlier, albanians L.O.V.E. americans.
Yes, Albania is better to visit during summer than winter. Good and cheapish food, friendly people and amazing views. It's not as organized as the other countries you mentioned but it will make a memorable experience.
I'd recommend spending 5 days in the Kotor bay area, staying in the town of Kotor and doing trips around the bay (Herceg Novi, Perast, Stolic). If you're into hiking, I'd recommend 3 days in Zabljak. Rooms are very expensive relative to others in Albania at 250-300€ per night but we thought it was worth visiting and experiencing. There were only about 10 rooms available last summer but they were in the process of building many more. The place fills up in the evening as it’s open to the public for dinner, so i would at least visit to dine.
Beer and rakia are, save for some upscale places in Prishtina, almost always 1 euro each, my average meal at restaurants was 4 euro. Being American in Kosovo is a bizarre but positive experience. It’s a very easy city to travel in, has great sights for you to visit, and you likely won’t feel awkward being alone in the city. If you’re thinking about visiting Zagreb alone, maybe this is the sign you need to book that trip!
